When you are young you can abuse yourself, but eventually, you have to take care of yourself more.
Why am I saying this? As I get older I realize that taking care of myself is so important to being able to be fully human. Many people will tell you with the best of intentions to hustle at work, school or some single aspect of your life. This is a fallacy. I have worked very hard in each of those areas and the results I got were not worth it.
When I hustled at work, I got sick and burnt out. When I hustled at school I didn’t have any fun and grades aren’t everything. When I hustled in other areas of my life I wasn’t impressed with the results. I hustled as an experiment. I wanted to see if I could get greater enjoyment out of working harder than others. I stayed later at work, I studied on the weekends and after hours. Sure I learned many things, but just knowing things doesn’t make one happy. You actually have to have an opportunity to put it in practice. Otherwise you just feel frustrated. When I studied at school I passed the tests but I missed doing those other activities like acting in plays that I enjoyed.
What I have learned in life is that you have to balance your life to be happy or at least have the possibility to be happy. You can’t be happy all the time and thats ok. There is always difficult situations that others put in your life that you have to deal with. Thats just the nature of the beast. Other people seem to love drama and they try to suck you into their drama. You can laugh and realize how silly life can be.
Taking care of yourself is more than just making sure your phyiscal needs are met. It is nourishing your mind, heart and your soul so that your life becomes more than just being part of the rat race.
