I have seen updates to AppArmor when I said yes to OpenSuse updates. I wanted to understand better what that did.
From its homepage:
AppArmor is an effective and easy-to-use Linux application security system. AppArmor proactively protects the operating system and applications from external or internal threats, even zero-day attacks, by enforcing good behavior and preventing both known and unknown application flaws from being exploited.
This is fantastic. This is invisible security to the user unlike Microsoft Defender or some endpoint protection like Crowdstrike that you might install for a Mac. It knows what apps need to function and only allows that functionality. This is the way that security could be on computers. Only allow that which is needed.
Now why do you care about this? Easy. When something like this is available as an Open Source project as it is now, it can be incorporated into other products for free. This is what Apple has done in the past. It has taken open-source projects and included them in its OS. This is a win/win for everyone. When open-source projects are used, it helps them grow and mature and become even more of an alternative to proprietary software.
This also makes things cheaper and easier for the average person which is you! Or maybe you are a genius I don’t know. The fact is that when things are in the public domain everyone can benefit, not just the people who have the money to buy proprietary licenses.
Is it any wonder that there is less malware for Linux?
