Its frustrating to deal with conflicting advice

I watched a YouTube video that said that if your resume matches 100% of what a company system is looking for, it will be discarded.

How for years people have been told to customize their resume based on the requirements of the position. What has happened is that as AI has made this easier, companies assume you are lying if you match all of the qualifications. Talk about changing the goalposts!

So here is what I would do. I wouldn’t add that you can do things in the nice to have, even if you can. From personal experience, when I tell a recruiter that I have all of that experience they don’t believe me. They are probably used to people lying so they assume that everyone lies.

I handle that belief by adding immediately. I am not a silver bullet, and I am not an expert at everything but I am familiar and a SME in certain areas. Then we can talk more about those topics. Don’t try to make it look like you know more than you do. I have been most effective when I undersell myself, not oversell.

When companies get hundreds/thousands of potential resumes, they are doing everything they can to narrow it down to a manageable number to look at. It may be unreasonable, but I’d rather be ignored than interviewed and someone changes their mind of their priorities.
