I was just prompted on my secondary computer to install OpenSuse updates. I did it and then the window went away. I was thinking about where is the restart and then I realized that most of the time after applying updates, restarts are not required.
This isn’t just the update process that has fewer reboots but everything. Rarely do you have to reboot the computer. Using Linux at least Mint Linux, OpenSuse, and now Nobara I have had almost none of the standard reboots that Mac/Windows have.
Now I have done some pretty intense things like changing hardware drivers, setting up Kubernetes, and turning the computer into an RDP remote connection server. Most of the time almost everything I have installed hasn’t required any additional work. Sometimes it will ask me to log out and log back in which takes 30 seconds tops. It isn’t the full reboot cycle and it is a pleasure to do. That’s one of the reasons that I wasn’t afraid to try something in OpenSuse. It was so easy and quick to configure that my curiosity said it was worth it.
It is remarkable how they have been able to change the environment without reboots. It is one of the reasons that I think Linux has a future for the desktop.
