I dreamed I was an immigrant to the US. It was a painful experience.

In my dream I was being grilled by the US customs and I had done everything correctly. I had followed the laws, and my paperwork was correct. The person giving me a hard time didn’t like my skin color and I couldn’t change that.

Why did I dream this? Since I have watched this video about immigrants I keep thinking of this song. https://chimac.net/the-most-american-song-i-have-ever-heard/ The best people I have known in my life were immigrants.

My grandmother came from Italy and she married a German man who also immigrated. I grew up with minorities, and I always related well with them. I admired their culture, and appreciated how they had strengths and benefits that the mostly white culture I grew up in didn’t have.

I understand that people are uncomfortable with people who don’t look like them. Many people live in a bubble where they are only around people who are like them. That must be comforting for them. However that insular thinking doesn’t work in a global society. We are strong because of our diversity. We see this not only on a personal level, but on a state and global one. One of the reasons that the US has been a leader in the world is that we have a wealth of culture and ideas. The very thing that had lead to our success, we want to eliminate?

I can’t change anyone heart and if you only want to be around others who look like you, then your life is less than it could be. I can’t imagine having my life without my immigrant grandmother, and so for me, real Americans accept and love immigrants.
