Empathy increases after you suffer

Some people need to suffer before they have empathy with others.

Why am I saying this? I have seen it in my own life. Many times jerks who have life easier than others, can’t imagine how the lives of others are until they are put in that situation.

Why am I saying this? I watched a YouTube video that showed that police in a state have a habit of arresting people for DUI that are innocent. More than 600 people were arrested in a short time period and their blood work came back and showed no drugs.

How did this happen? Because police choose to use the unreliable field sobriety test instead of having a breathalyzer. I just looked and professional breathalyzers are only a few hundred dollars.

Even though breathalyzers are more reliable than field sobriety tests, they still can be affected by medical conditions that people may not know they have or by lip balm or mouthwash. So even those aren’t perfect. However they are at least more objective, and less subjective and biased.

Now imagine that you haven’t been drinking and you get pulled over and due to one of these conditions you get falsely accused of DUI. That alone could make you lose your job, and make it hard to get a job in the future. Then you have the cost of defending yourself in court, and of course the unnecessary pain and suffering of the process.

After all this is done, it is a memory you won’t easily forget. Then when someone says to you I was accused of a DUI you can empathize with them.

Now why did I say all of that? It is to say this. We don’t need to suffer each way that our fellow human beings suffer. We can imagine how we might feel in the situation and show them that we feel empathy for them.

Having empathy costs nothing, but it makes a world of difference for those who suffer.
