It occurred to me that one of the most annoying coworkers I ever had was someone who tried to tell me how to do my job.
He was a smart guy and I respected him, but people have different ways of accomplishing a task. Both his/my way worked and the customer didn’t care which we used. One way wasn’t any better, and it was truly a matter of opinion. However, he liked to share that his way was better.
I just humored him. When you deal with difficult coworkers the easiest thing to do is just to smile and let them believe whatever they want to believe. Everyone needs to learn from mistakes, and eventually, he will see how treating others this way is a mistake.
Now with that said, sometimes I have directly confronted someone with something that they did that was annoying and needed to stop. I have a lot of patience, but when something is disrespectful then patience is not a helpful strategy. Don’t let your sense of self-worth be determined by jerks. Everyone deserves respect, and if you aren’t getting it then find someplace that appreciates you.
In the meantime, if you have the urge to tell someone how to do their job don’t. Then you won’t be the annoying coworker.
