I wondered if I could use ChatGPT to generate a grocery list. It turns out it works very well.
First I tried to go to the grocery stores where I would buy things and see if I could export the data. I thought that if I exported the data, then I could have a more accurate sample of what I would probably like.
Unfortunately both retail stores where I have bought things online don’t allow me to export my own data. I could probably call them and request it from customer service, but from past experience this would be at least an hour process. I wasn’t that interested. So I thought lets just see what it can do by itself. It has stolen all of the Internets data, maybe my tastes are not so unique. So i typed in:
Create a shopping list that is vegan and lactose intolerant for a picky eater
And I got this:
Here’s a vegan and lactose-intolerant-friendly shopping list tailored for a picky eater:
Fresh Produce
- Apples, bananas, berries (like strawberries or blueberries)
- Carrots, cucumbers, and celery sticks
- Leafy greens (like spinach or romaine lettuce)
- Sweet potatoes or regular potatoes
- Avocado
- Cherry tomatoes
Pantry Staples
- Whole wheat bread or gluten-free bread (if needed)
- Pasta (like whole wheat, chickpea, or lentil-based)
- Quinoa or rice (white or brown)
- Rolled oats or steel-cut oats
- Peanut butter or almond butter
- Canned beans (like chickpeas or black beans)
- Tomato sauce or diced tomatoes
Snacks
- Plain popcorn kernels or pre-popped, unsweetened popcorn
- Hummus or guacamole
- Vegan granola bars or fruit bars
- Dairy-free dark chocolate
Dairy Alternatives
- Almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk
- Dairy-free yogurt (like coconut or almond-based)
- Vegan cheese slices or shreds
Frozen Foods
- Frozen vegetables (like peas, corn, or mixed veggies)
- Vegan pizza or veggie burgers
- Frozen fruits (like mango or berries for smoothies)
Condiments & Extras
- Olive oil or avocado oil
- Balsamic vinegar
- Soy sauce or tamari (gluten-free soy sauce)
- Nutritional yeast (for a cheesy flavor)
- Spices like garlic powder, paprika, and cinnamon
Not bad. I didn’t like a few items so I typed this:
remove cherry tomatoes, avocado, quinoa, peanut butter, dark chocolate, add chocolate soy milk, remove veggie burgers
Then it updated the list to this:
Here’s the updated shopping list:

If there’s anything else you want to adjust, let me know!
Perfect. Now making a shopping list is a breeze. Instead of having to type things over and over each week, I can just modify this and I’m set. Thanks ChatGPT.
