I was using Brave browser as I do all the time in Nobara Linux. I have been testing it lately.
I was surprised when I was editing text in a 3 X 2 table. The text was disappearing and then reappearing as I was trying to delete and edit it. I had never seen this behavior before and within 30 seconds I saw a popup from Microsoft. “Allow access to Microsoft 365 account. Your browser settings are preventing an optimal experience with Microsoft 365. Allow access to improve your experience.” Ok, I clicked the sign-in button and was signed in.
The issues didn’t stop. I figured it was because Brave has something called the Brave Shield which tries to preserve your privacy by blocking pop-ups and other things. Rarely to get a site to work you have to turn it off. Very rarely. I turned it off and the editing in Word became normal again. What was Microsoft doing that Brave was blocking in Linux?
I had the same Brave shield on with other OS and didn’t ever see this issue or error message. I will investigate it after I finish this post. I just wanted to share that if you are using Brave and it gives you this error message now you know how to fix it.
Nobara has a few flaws. So far it seems to have some screen corruption when it redraws the Brave browser window when you resize it. It is not a big deal but I haven’t seen that behavior on other OS. I would put the fault here on NVIDIA. However now that I am thinking about it, I have seen less screen corruption/garbage in Linux than in Windows/mac. With Windows/mac it is common for Windows to fail to redraw properly or things not refreshing properly.
I also think this is because I have two video cards in the laptop so naturally the OS is probably not designed for this and can get confused. This system has been both the best graphics I have experienced and simultaneously the worst. It depends on the Operating system I am using. It is like a different machine between Windows/Linux. I find this very interesting.
Will I turn the Brave shield back on? It’s on except for that one place. If I discover MS was doing something it shouldn’t be, then that will be a separate post.
