You can’t fix stupid

One of the motto that I live by is that You can’t fix stupid.

What does this mean? It means that when you come across stupid people you may want to help educate them. They are not able to be educated. It is not that they can’t learn, it is that they don’t want to learn.

We see this in videos that we see online. We see people talk to people who share different political views. We see that when we talk about facts, they can’t seem to understand that the facts contradict their belief. They claim that the facts aren’t real, or that there is a conspiracy that the facts aren’t trustworthy.

I grew up having these conversations everyday. It was so frustrating to me that other people couldn’t see what was so obvious. It wasn’t obvious to them. In fact they saw the opposite. Let me give you an example.

Some of my high school classmates called me a homophobic slur. It didn’t matter that I had had a gf, or that women flirted with me. When I asked him to stop saying that he became more ignorant. I went to the principle and told him what I had been called. He spoke with the couch and that name calling stopped. There was such a hatred of peoples sexuality and later I learned that the person allegedly raped a woman at a party that a friend told me about. I told my mentor about it who was a teacher there and she said she would take care of the issue. I couldn’t directly confront the victim because she hated me, and she would never accept help from me.

There was alot of sexual violence where I grew up. Stupid people hurting others in every way that they could.

Another example was when I was working with a special education student. She had a below average IQ and was very trusting of people. I worked with her because she was in the drama class and she was unable to do the real work. I asked the teacher if i could be responsible for her. Why? Remember before that my teacher in six grade asked me to help out another special education student? He asked me to talk to him during recess and my classmates thought I was in trouble.

It turned out that he said that he noticed how I treated people and thought that I would be a helpful influence on this special education student. He asked if I would be interested in helping him and that if it became too much I could stop. I said sure. I felt great that I was trusted to improve someone else life.

Now this brings me back to high school. This person told me that one of the football players told her that if she let him fuck her that he would be friends with her. I asked if she agreed and she said no. I wasn’t sure that she wasn’t lying to me. I think she did and then realized by my expression that was a bad thing. I had no choice but to talk to her special education teacher. She thanked me for coming forward.

This is not to glorify myself but rather to show that stupid people may not have the capacity to learn. I am not saying that the special student couldn’t learn, but it was very difficult and she often forgot. She did learn some limited things with me and the time we spent together that year. My classmates thought it was sweet that I was helping her and the teacher appreciated it too. Some people are difficult to mainstream.

What was more stupid than her, was the people taking advantage of her. I wanted to go beat that person up, but again I only had her word. I wasn’t in a position to deliver justice, so I relied on others to help me.

Stupid people hurt others and think it won’t hurt themselves. It always hurts yourself when we hurt others.
