I mentioned before that I was only going to use LinkedIn as my social network. It has been interesting doing that.
First the habit to do old things is strong. I found myself when I was bored going to Youtube and then remembering “Hey I am not doing this anymore.” I stopped myself and redirected myself.
Yesterday instead of watching angry people talk on social media and making me angry, I listened to the music on my website. Studies have shown that just 15 minutes of music a day has positive effects on mood and many other aspects, and I found that listening to the music helped relax me and I really enjoyed it. I realized that when I was driving to work I had a habit to listen to music, but doing WFH I don’t listen to music and need to do that everyday.
I also realized that one of the reasons that I looked at Youtube is that I found watching movies online unsatisfying. It is hard to enjoy movies when you have read lots of books. I am not bragging, I just find that most movies are boring, and a waste of time. I can’t get into most movies, and when its too stupid I just stop watching. I have continually started movies and then skipped through them because I can’t stand the story or some other point about it.
This is not to say that I am better than movies, just that perhaps because I have seen so many movies I have seen enough and even watching highly rated IMBD movies don’t seem to help.
I think the answer here is to shift from watching movies to reading books again and I always find books more satisfying content. One of the best times in my life is when I lived close to a library and could get new books every few days. It was super easy too because they had popular books near the check out desk and so I’d pick six or so and then check them out and they were excellent for the most part.
Looks like I’m going to have to find my local library now. I hope that hasn’t been closed.
I will continue avoiding social media. I will only go to YouTube to view music videos or documentaries but no more junk. I can’t take the junk that is just trying to stir people up.
