Using a computer as a kid changed the entire course of my life.
I was given a computer as a kid because there were computers in school and it was a way to help kids learn. I immediately became obsessed with it, and was so thrilled for it being part of my life.
As I used the computer I wanted to understand more how it worked. So I did many things that while short term were unhelpful, long term it helped me. I made the mistake of erasing the entire computer. A family friend helped to reinstall the computer and I didn’t make that mistake again.
In High school my peers would ask for my help with their home computer. I would help people as I could and when they asked for payment I said how about dinner or some food? They gladly gave me that and often slipped me some money as well. Don’t tell the IRS ok?
After high school I realized that computers were my most marketable skill and had my own computer consulting company. I had some success and that enabled me to make a credible resume and move to a major city. Then I got a job and made more money the first year than I ever made in my life. I felt incredibly rich to be able to support myself.
This isn’t to brag, but rather to show that learning a skill that is in demand can pay off if you are lucky and find the right opportunities in life. It wasn’t an easy path, but I had friends who helped me survive and in the end everything turned out ok.
Life sometimes is difficult and feels impossible, but when you have a network and friends who believe in you, you can do anything. We are a community first, and individuals second.
