Sonos Ace headphones only officially pair with two devices, but I got them to work with three.

First I should state that while this works it requires a bit of a manual adjustment.

You pair the first two devices as normal and when you switch between them it almost always knows which one you want to use. If it doesn’t you simply select it in the Bluetooth settings and it activates and is usable. This is something that I have to do on my Windows laptop, rarely on my Linux one.

Now the third device is interesting. In my case I have it connected to a Linux laptop, a Windows laptop, and an iPhone. It has no problem connecting to all three Bluetooth devices. The problem is that when a call comes in, and the phone is available (Bluetooth is on) it will default to answering it if it was last connected to it. That is fine and helpful and makes sense. However sometimes I am in a meeting on my windows laptop, and so I turn the Bluetooth off on my iPhone. Then if a call happens during a meeting it doesn’t grab the Sonos mic/headphones and try to answer it.

What if I want to take a call during a meeting or I know one is going to happen during a meeting? Then I don’t use the headset and use the laptop built in mic/speakers and use the headphones for the call.

Now if I am not using the windows laptop for a meeting/work, I might be researching things on the Linux laptop for the client. So most of the time the Sonos Ace is connected through Bluetooth to a Linux ThinkPad. This has worked very well. The sound support in Linux in my opinion is better than the sound support in Windows.

Rarely have I had an issue with this setup. I have been using this for at least 3 months and only once did I have a problem. It was fixed by removing the Bluetooth connection in windows and letting it find it again. Bluetooth has always been flaky for me so I don’t consider this unusual. The Logitech Bluetooth mouse has been the most reliable device I have connected through Bluetooth but it never goes more than a few inches from the laptop. In comparison I wear this headset 20 feet from my door to the trash in my hall, and it works well for the most part. It get a little static when I enter the room to throw away the trash, but that is at least two concrete walls and 20 feet and that far better than I expect Bluetooth to be reliable at.

I love these headphones and they have made my life easier and more enjoyable.
