Unexpected computer reboots

Remember the story where my laptop wouldn’t start? Everyday since I got it, it randomly restarted.

Of course I tried to diagnose the problem. I happened even when there weren’t updates applied to it. Event viewer said it was happening on the USB controller, but I didn’t have anything plugged into USB or install any software/drivers on the device.

I called the help desk again and this time the first gentleman who helped me remembered me. After looking at it through TeamViewer he decided to send me a new computer that arrived two days later. I was thrilled.

Now of course the laptop continued to misbehave but you have to roll with the punches. I tried to join a meeting and it froze when joining and then once I restarted the browser and tried again it joined. It was a zoom meeting in the browser, so perhaps there was some kind of incompatibility. I was using a Bluetooth headset/integrated mic so if this happens again I won’t use the headset and see if it makes any difference.

Why am I sharing this? Mostly to say that when you get a used computer you always have the chance to inherit someone else problems. When I made small talk with the help desk staff he said that many older devices that had been upgraded to Windows 11 had all kind of bugs/issues. Not a great endorsement for 11, but seems to be common from what I have read online.

People loved 10 and not happy they are forced to go to 11 for security. I think people are getting tired of putting all of their eggs in one basket.
