Ever hear the saying “The Devil is in the details”?
Have you found that to be true in your life? Isn’t every time that money is involved, there is an overwhelming amount of details that you can’t possibly review or even know?
I remember the first home that I bought. There was a stack of papers to sign that was 2 inches high. When I asked them why they hadn’t shared this before so that I could read it, they laughed. They said no one reads the contracts. I said I want to read it and they said that they won’t sell the house if I do. I signed and regretted buying the house.
Same story when I bought my first car. Overwhelming paperwork with language that no one could understand. I signed.
Same thing with being a citizen. Politicians are famous for lying, yet we believe them? We know that when money is involved, people will try to abuse us, and yet when our lives are involved they are suddenly appointed by God?
To me this is puzzling. The most moral people in history were killed for being a good example, and we elevate the worst kind of people. Why do we do this? Do we like the lies? Do we want to see others suffer? I have to conclude we do.
Betty White once said that the human being is a very vengeful creature. I think that deep down, peoples hurt and hate is why they choose cruelly to others. It takes courage to face your fears, and it is easier to just scapegoat and blame others. Isn’t it interesting? We claim to be all about personal independence but when something goes wrong, it isn’t our fault but the black people and queer people. It is hypocritical to attribute our success to ourselves, and our failures to others.
So we are hypocrites. Can you own that?
