Sometimes companies have very little choice in who to hire

You may be surprised to hear, but sometimes on LinkedIn companies have very little choice in who to hire.

Why do I say this? Because of this experience. Repeatedly recruiters tell me that I am one of very few that qualify for what their client is looking for. This is not to brag, but to share. I have focused on an IT niche that is hard to fill, and has been painful to do in the past. Yesterday I had a recruiter tell me that I was one of only 3 people on LinkedIn who had the skills.

This is not a one time event. I have often had recruiters tell me that I am on a very short list. That recruiter wanted me to move to another state and make less money, and I told her that I didn’t want to move from NYC and make less money. She figured that I would have a higher salary and wouldn’t be interested and she was right. Why would you make less money if you don’t have to?

Now why am I sharing this? I have recruiters come at me and say that a job is on-site, hybrid or whatever and I tell that I am currently only doing WFH. I thank them for their interest and before I say goodbye they often say “This can be remote”. Great. If they don’t say that, then sometimes they will call me back and say that they got approval it can be remote. If you have the skills a company needs, they will be flexible with you.

I have said this before. Work and gain skills that are not common and easily gained. Try to be irreplaceable and you will have better job security. Nothing is guaranteed in life, but I have done better with job security since I have focused on this.

It is scary right now for everyone in the job market. Try to do what seems impossible and you will have an easier life. If you can’t do what seems impossible, then find another way to stand out from the competition. Find your unique skill and focus on it!
