Sometimes the most impatient people are IT people.
I felt this yesterday and today when I was updating a test system. I knew that it could go faster since I have worked with faster machines. However I just need to be patient, because it takes whatever time it takes.
Interestingly these i7 machines have 64 GB of ram. Rarely do companies give users that much ram. I personally would have done 32GB and a faster processor, but they may have requirements that I don’t know about.
Many times in IT our job is waiting, and then when disaster hits rowing as fast as we can to a solution. IT can be very boring, or stress killing you. Right now there is more art than science in how most companies run IT.
I don’t mind things being measured, and having best practices. I think generally those are helpful. IT people like to be cowboys, and I’d rather just have a process to follow so that we don’t have to have that kind of stress. However each company runs IT as they see fit, and don’t always listen to the proactive advice to keep us out of cowboy territory. They like taking chances with the cattle rustlers, and then being the hero with dealing with an emergency. I think this is a weakness with ego myself.
Lots of testing and boring waiting to make things reliable. That’s what I am doing now. That’s ok though because I am good at that. It gives me time to think deeper/do research on what the real cause may be.
