I realized this when learning information about why society is like it is.
First example. Typhoid Mary was a cook who got others sick unknowingly at first. However when she was told she was making other people sick, she was taken to an island to protect the population. They later let her back into society after she promised that she wouldn’t cook for others to protect public health. Under a different name she started to cook again and had another outbreak of the disease which killed people. After this, they put her back on the island for the rest of her life.
Second example. The first person who bought an SUV. SUV are safer for the driver. However they are more lethal for pedestrians and non SUV passengers. The number of lives saved by SUV is less than the lives lost by the deaths from non SUV people. In a real sense, SUV have lead to greater deaths. But what does that matter as long as I am safe?
When people make decisions that help them but hurt others, this should have a consequence. First once other people realize this, they need to be removed from society. Second if they continue to hurt others then they need to work to survive. Everyone who hurts someone should have consequences.
We don’t have a right to hurt others, even if some people get away with it. The right to personal freedom depends on acknowledging the wider community that grants those freedoms. There is no freedom without responsibility.
