I probably sound like a broken record, but without security you don’t have anything in life.
This isn’t just about holding onto what you have. It is about providing stability for the framework of life. Life is so fragile. We trust in democracy and elections for example. If we aren’t secure that this is true, then our democracy will quickly die.
Now this isn’t about being political but rather that what is foundational in life is trust. Trust is made when banks are secure, when the social contract is enforced. That is, when honest people work an honest days pay, then they can survive and even get ahead.
I see security beyond just the simple fact of CIA (confidentiality, integrity, availability). I see it as the reason why we do what we do. We work not only to survive but to make the world move forward with progress. If our society is not improving for the masses, we are failing. I have to say we have been failing to help the masses of our people. The rich people have done great however. Inequality continues to rise.
If people don’t feel secure in their lives, we can’t have a secure society. Is there any wonder that there is so much online crime? When online crime is easier to hide, gets bigger profits, why would you risk offline crime. Being someone who can extort millions out of companies, well that is a one and done life isn’t it? They get their money, go to a country that doesn’t care how they got it and retire. Crime does pay, and it is because in our desire for privacy we give up accountability.
Now I am not arguing that privacy isn’t important. I think it is. I also think there need to be questions and some kind of justification why people can deposit money and the banks need to be also integral in this process. When a bank profits from crime, why should they stop it? Banks want security, but security from accountability, from pro-social morality, not from profits.
I don’t pretend to have the answer, but I think we all know we can do a better job in being accountable and having systems that hold people accountable.
