Received a phishing email today

Job
Job
job

This came under the guise of a job opportunity. It was really obvious and weird.

First the subject line was Voluntary Forms Request (EEO). Now many companies will send something like this through email, but I never fill them out. I don’t trust links in email by default, and I would manually go to a website and fill something out first.

Second it said you have been recommended for a (title). Never do systems or people recommend you for a job. Even if you have a relationship with a recruiter/hiring manager, they will reach out to you and see if you are interested and then start the process of applying for the job.

Then it continued to say that we may reach out to you for more information. No one reaches out to you through email for more information. They call or have a video meeting. The only time you should trust email from someone you don’t know is when you are starting the process of getting to know them. Once you know them, you should always correspond in voice/video or through an online verified way like LinkedIn InMail. Recruiters that ask you to divulge personal things in email are 1. dumb, 2. not someone you can verify if they are truly who they claim to be.

Then the email wanted me to click on a link. I don’t think so buddy. We don’t know each other like that. Especially since this email was unexpected, that should set up another warning flag. If you apply to jobs all the time and don’t remember, the rule of thumb is to suspect every email/text message.

Oh yeah the thing that makes me sure this is a non legitimate job is that when I typed in the address they so kindly provided at the bottom it did resolve to a legitimate company with the same name. However they don’t do recruiting, and so its is clear they are faking it.

Is it possible that you might miss a suitable job opportunity this way? Yes its possible. However it is far more likely that you will also miss getting scammed by people who are terrible at it.
