NYC law requires sorting garbage waste

In order to comply with NYC law I have to start sorting my garbage. Why am I sharing this?

It requires a new set of skills and tools to do this. I bought a new garbage can yesterday just for food waste that has a lid.

The problem is that while the building takes out the trash if you put it in a closet in the hall, it hasn’t worked out how to do the food waste.

So right now I have to go outside and put the food waste in a special food container. Now that food container is very small and its not adequate to the task.

I am not complaining just sharing the challenges that buildings have to adjust to cope with the law. I also bought food recycling garbage bags so that it would be appropriate to put in the waste container. More expenses for sure for the average person.

One of the things that I considered doing in the past is composting the food waste. I have seen many devices that allow you to do that. I still might do that but the problem would be what would I do with the fertilizer in creates? Interestingly the building is also starting a gardening thing, perhaps in response to this food waste opportunity. That would be a nice side effect.

Now one option I just thought of is if the food composting works well, perhaps the building could use it for the gardening thing they are doing. This is a low priority but it now on the back burner for me. That would be really neat to generate something from something considered waste.
