There are always reasons for other people to dislike us. For me, some people dislike me because I am quirky.
Its not that I choose to be quirky. Life would be easier for me if I could be overly serious, boring and like everyone else. The cost of being unique is that you collect haters, just like everyone.
One of the things that helped me in my life is when a doctor said that I shouldn’t try to win over everyone. I learned that no matter how funny, charming or authentic I am some people don’t want to connect and that is ok. I can’t and don’t need to be friends with everyone.
I think being quirky has been a detriment to hiring and job interviews as well. Even though I have a sense of humor and authentic with people, in a job interview they aren’t looking for quirky. They probably find it unprofessional and not serious. Which is fine, you can be professional and quirky but not everyone knows that.
If someone rejects you in a hiring interview for being who you are, clearly they don’t value you. That’s why I have told you to accept that you won’t be everyone cup of tea. Which is great. Not everyone is perfect in every culture. I do think that there are too many cultures at work that take themselves too seriously. Their pride is extreme in many interviews and I can’t get out of the interview fast enough sometimes.
You don’t need to change who you are to get a job. There are all kinds of people in the world and some of them will appreciate you.
