Microsoft’s influence casts a long shadow

Everyday I am reminded of how influential Microsoft is in the IT industry.

I logged into Fastmail my web based email provider and now they have the same interface as recent Microsoft products. They have the left column or blade that shows the main functions of the app. This is similar to the interface of having tabs without the actual design of tabs.

I don’t mind the interface. I don’t mind any interface that I can get used to. I think my favorite interface was the classic MacOS. Although the Fedora interface that I recently used might be my new favorite. It is simple and well done and I really enjoyed using it. If only all of my Microsoft programs could work in it I would be using it right now. Unfortunately being a Microsoft expert I have to use the Microsoft products, not the superior Linux/Mac ones.

I understand that Microsoft is being asked to do the impossible with UI. They want something simple that first time users can use, and also something powerful that more advanced users can use. I think they should just make it explicit when it is setup. Ask the user if they want the simplified or professional UI. I think users have become sophisticated enough to be able to make that choice.

Yes I know that you can toggle between the simple and classic UI. That isn’t the same. You have to know where it is, and most people don’t explore their software. We need to show people that they have choices in how they work, and not force them down the path of what someone else thinks is best.

I like being able to try different interfaces and that probably why I like testing different software. One day we will understand things conceptually and need less real world influences for people to use the computer. I look forward to that day.
