Manage your energy

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do it.

Life gives us opportunities each day to get stuck in things that don’t help us. Often we can want to help improve things for others but we need to consider our actions.

I see two kinds of people in the world. The first kind believes that because they suffered something, that other people should have to suffer it. I was often told as a kid that that’s the way its always been done and that never made sense to me.

The second kind of person wants to prevent others from needlessly suffering. However noble those goals might seem, it isn’t so morally clear.

For example when I was younger I thought that abortion was wrong and that helping those women by providing resources was the answer. Now I see with experience and knowledge that every woman has the right to do with her body as she wants. If men had to have babies, abortion would be available on every corner. My religious upbringing blinded me to the fact of the complexity of the world and that simple black/white thinking doesn’t reflect reality.

It may not be morally clear what to do but one thing is clear. We need to manage our energy and directly help those who need it. Getting angry, even writing emails has very little effect on change. Auto-deleting email is easy to do and anger isn’t taken seriously. Find concrete ways to bring about change, and focus on that.

Otherwise your energy is wasted and your life meaningless.
