You don’t need to attract everyone, just focus on your target audience.
Why am I saying this? Largely applying on LinkedIn is a waste of time. Perhaps 1% of the time I have gotten a response. I had better results applying directly on company websites even though it was slower.
Does that mean that I will stop using LinkedIn? Not yet. Recruiters reach out to me now, and that is far more effective.
What this means is that your LinkedIn profile is more important to getting a job than your resume. It demonstrates the skills that you have, and it leads to someone asking you for your resume.
A resume is still crucial. The company still wants to see that you have the skills to do the job and they don’t want to look at LinkedIn profiles. I would argue however that ultimately a curated list of candidates with LinkedIn profiles shows more useful information than even an in person/remote interview.
Why? Anyone who has done an interview knows what to say. You say what the company wants to hear. Lets be honest. People play the game, and companies get exactly what they are looking for. The more deceptive and manipulative you are, the faster you will get a job.
This means that people who are honest and humble, and who don’t have an ego the size of Mount Rushmore suffer. This is not me claiming I am a victim. I don’t want to work at companies with people who have mountain sized egos. I am glad that some people perceive me to be less smart than them, because they are jerks I wouldn’t want to work with anyway.
Just like dating, getting a job is setting boundaries and respecting yourself and others with those boundaries. Boundaries are so important in life. Beware and flee anyone who doesn’t respect you.
