How disappointing. No this is not to brag, it is just that recruiters/hiring managers don’t seem to do a good job pulling the skills out that are listed in a resume. I thought that listing them as skills would help them.
The problem with listing them individually is that you are asked to indicate each job you used the skill at each skill. This is fine but misleading. It would probably be more helpful if they had a scale of beginner, medium, and expert rather than the number of positions. You can have very little involvement or a lot of involvement. Years are not a proxy for understanding something.
Now interestingly even though I just added some of the skills they seem to have people who have acknowledged that I have them. Adding skills must notify your network that you have added them, so they show up. Also, I had taken some LinkedIn skills evaluations and once I added the skill, it showed that LinkedIn skills evaluation that I passed. So you might find yourself finding that the “new” skills you listed have corroborating evidence for them.
Why does LinkedIn limit them to only 100? In the past, they limited them to 50 and that was painful. I only added them today because it said to add skills when I was reading a job listing. I thought of course. I had tried to add more skills a few months ago but was unable to. I appreciate that they are giving us more space but I think they need to do better with having a hierarchy of skills and not counting each variation as a separate skill.
For example, if you work with technology and you have worked with Macintosh Hardware and Windows hardware then once you add them both to your skills, Mac & Windows hardware should be one skill. Yes, it takes different skills to work with them, but when you artificially limit people’s skills you don’t help recruiters or candidates find work that uses the skills they have. In addition to skills-based recruiting, how can you differentiate yourself with only 100 skills? This also works against those with experience. Anyone who has worked in a field for more than 5 years has way more than 100 skills.
I might have to delete skills to add the more high-value skills in there. I think this is my next step.
