I was thinking about a YouTube video I saw yesterday. It was for a chair that many people on YouTube are hyping is the most comfortable chair they ever sat in. Since I sit for my job of course I was interested and watched it.
It was interesting but a couple aspects about it bothered me. One was how much you sink down into the seat. It was described as sitting on a marshmallow and while that sounds comfortable, what I have learned from beds that are too soft is that there isn’t enough support and your back and muscles hurt if it is too soft.
The other thing that bothered me about it was the depth of the seat cushion. My current seat cushion is 2 inches uncompressed, and about an inch and a half compressed. This means that for the most part the seat doesn’t wrap around me. However that seat was wrapping around the persons legs, and that would mean you don’t have air flow and besides being sweaty and hot it is kind of gross as well.
Does this mean that I am looking to change seats? No of course not. I disagree with almost all of that specialty chair testing recommendations. I have sat in many of those chairs and hated them. Part of it was that I am an HSP and also that its hard for me to like what is popular because that is mostly hype.
Why was I thinking about it now if I didn’t think it had value? Mostly because I was thinking about all of the things that I have done to find something healthy and comfortable in my life. It was in response to some kind of stress and discomfort I was facing. I am not facing any discomfort in the chair that I am using now. I bought it about $1200 maybe 5 years ago and I love it. I have no desire to exchange it.
Its interesting to see what is available, but changing things just for the sake of change has no value to me. If I change something, I want to see a dramatic improvement. If it isn’t dramatic, I don’t change it.
Being comfortable and healthy is not a requirement to be happy but it helps.
