I was noticing that people in my company were happier than usual today. Yes it is Friday but even more happy than it being the normal Friday.

So I was thinking why this could be. I realized that we all got paid yesterday, so probably they felt good paying off a debt or buying something nice for them to enjoy.

Now I am wondering if companies could have the most engaged employees by paying them everyday. Why do we wait for people to get paid? In the old days you could argue it had to do with having to print checks or mail them, but now that isn’t an issue. Most people have it directly deposited.

So why the delay in getting paid? I think it is because if someone was let go that day, it might be a challenge to stop their pay from being paid the next day. It probably shows that companies are not as agile as they want. I think it also happens as a way to provide some leverage for the company. If they damage something at the company, theoretically they could have it taken out of their paycheck, but this isn’t a convincing argument.

I think in the future payment will be done daily and we won’t have this payday morale boost we see now. Still it is always nice to see your coworkers in a good mood and it makes the day more pleasant.
