Don’t accept disrespect

I had an interview yesterday that was disrespectful. I am only sharing it with you so that you can learn from my mistakes.

In interviews sometimes people like to ask very specific detailed questions that show their knowledge and background. It is not always possible to know every answer, and I didn’t know every answer yesterday. So I said I don’t know, and then shared how I could relate what I do know to what he asked.

At the end of the interview the interviewer apologized for being too aggressive with me, and of course I forgave him. I understand why people are aggressive, but it isn’t professional or necessary.

When I shared with the recruiter about this experience he wasn’t surprised. He asked if it was a no from me and I thought it and quickly said no. Increasingly I have had to say no to companies that during the interview process are disrespectful. I also researched the company on Glassdoor and their rating was poor.

I spent several hours researching the company, brushing up on questions they might ask, and getting pretty. I worried about the interview because while I had 80% of the skills, it was still a stretch. However I had stretched at previous jobs and done it well, so its worth the chance to grow. However based on that experience I would never work at that company or any they are associated with. When your employees give your candidates an unpleasant experience, it narrows the future success of any company.
