I have bought many cheap computers and they aren’t worth it.
Of course I was tempted by the price and I thought that it will probably do the job. It turns out that they have some significant shortcomings that made it difficult for me to use.
Some of them I sold online. Most of them I gave away to friends. If it is less than a thousand it just doesn’t offer enough functionality for me to work with it.
This isn’t me saying it isn’t fast or pretty enough. Overwhelmingly cheap laptops break and those all did. I tried Acer, Asus, Gateway and others I can’t even remember. Nothing is reliable or it just doesn’t work.
For example all of those laptops track pad was barely usable. Only in the last year have laptops started to have acceptable track pads that compare favorably to a Apple laptop. They also tended to be hot, noisy and uncomfortable to use. Some of them had weird sounds and that was unpleasant.
The favorite laptops I have had in my life have been my current MSI which is pretty quiet and cool even though it is the most powerful one I have ever owned. I also enjoyed a $1400 Asus which is my emergency laptop. I like my current cheap Think pad with Linux as well, which was donated by a former client.
I have had many other brands and of course Mac laptops. Why weren’t they my favorite? Mostly because I couldn’t play games on them. I used PlayStation until they treated me badly and now Sony is on my do not support list. I really like being able to play mobile games with Mumu player android emulator on my PC. If Macs had had better gaming support in the past I would have chosen that. Now they are making steps to support gaming, but it is too little too late.
If you don’t do IT stuff like me, and you haven’t had experience with other brands or don’t care to have the best then a sub $1000 laptop will work for you. Its your money so do what makes you happy.
