My first winter with a south facing window and it is incredible. It is so warm!
Today for example even though it is in the 50’s outside, the temp on the air Exchanger says it is 83 degrees. The heat hasn’t come on once.
The sun is just warming things up even though I have some vertical curtains partly open and then a semi-transparent white curtain filtering it further. This is so that the fig plant will get the indirect light it needs.
I adjusted the vertical curtains today to be slightly more closed to see if it helps reduce the heat. Its going to perhaps take daily adjustment to find the right balance between light and heat.
I don’t mind. If this results in the plant growing healthy then that is worthwhile to do. If the plant dies, then it is too temperamental for my talent.
My grandmother was great at growing plants being a florist. She understood exactly what needed to be done. At her home she has a lot of plants and she enjoyed watering them. Sometimes I would help her water and although she didn’t need my help, it make me feel valuable as a kid. I would sometimes ask why she didn’t water some plants more. She said that overwatering will rot their roots. She said that anything in excess will cause problems.
Now that I am taking care of this plant I see that balance is really what plants need. I’m sure it loves this warm temp, but my ideal range is in the 70’s. Hopefully it will cool down with the adjustment to the shades. Otherwise its time to buy another fan.
Would I buy a home with a south facing window? Sure. I’d put my tropical plants in it.
