Once again I had many people suggest to me that I should do comedy as a profession. I’m not sure that is a compliment when I am trying to fix their computer.
I would joke with them asking if they felt I was unskilled at fixing their computer. They said no but the frequency that I got this comment surprised me.
Comedy is about surprising people about things they don’t expect. People say they don’t like to be tricked but they love it. That is what comedy is. It is tricking them that their thoughts are correct, and then showing them they are not.
For example I love to talk with words that have double meanings with friends and people who are open to me. If someone isn’t open, they get professional Brian who is serious. However if they are open to knowing who I am then they get professional Brian who can be funny at times. It helps the workplace if you can carefully do clean humor.
It makes me feel good when coworkers say that having me around makes the work day more bearable. There is alot of drudgery in peoples lives and if we can reduce it then we should. I think humor is a wonderfully kind way to make people feel better and it often increases teamwork and camaraderie. Boy that word isn’t easy to spell.
As long as you are respectful and careful with humor, it can be a professional asset.
