My high school counselor advised that I was perfect for a customer service role.
I thought I could do more than customer service. I had used my computer all of my childhood and growing up, and I had significant skills. My classmates and others were asking me to help fix their computer problems and I did it successfully.
When they asked what I wanted for payment I said how about dinner and when they felt that wasn’t enough they would give me cash. I learned then that perhaps I could make a living with IT.
Now part of being good in any job is your ability to give good customer service. However that isn’t all that being a helpful IT person is. It is also understanding complex things, and presenting information to help decision makers make helpful decisions.
Sometimes people will suggest things based on a superficial understanding of who you are. Don’t let anyone tell you what your future is.
