Loss of power on Saturday for my building

A vehicle hit the power/utility pole at midnight on Saturday. Since then it has been educational having this happen.

First after it happened they closed the road so that other drivers wouldn’t be put at risk. Then immediately they started to assess the situation. Turns out because I was in bed falling asleep I was aware of the lights outside and looked and saw the police closing the road. I didn’t think much of it but noticed that the power briefly turned off/on and figured it must be a coincidence.

The next day the water in the building stopped and it turns out that when the power loss happened it resulted in partial power. Only 1/3 at most of the things worked. This is a problem because I need an air filter to breath easily and the pumps for the building require electricity to function so no power equals no water.

Now I had some bottles of emergency water and used those. I also went to the mall to have lunch and spend time in an AC place until the building sent an update. The update was terrible. They said it may last another 2 days and that power will go out in order for them to fix it. They didn’t have any specifics.

So I went back home and we were told that an emergency generator was providing power and to conserve power as much as possible. Failure to do so would stop all power for everyone. I am typing this in a dark environment with just the AC/Air filter going.

How does this impact my job? I told my boss and he told me to stay safe. I took a vacation day today and may take one tomorrow. I don’t want to use the work equipment when there might be a voltage surge/spike and I have the vacation time saved up. This is the time to use it.

Am I worried that I will suffer further? Fortunately today is only in the low 80s and so I can open a window when the power goes out again. In the meantime I am just trying to survive and my next purchase will be a large UPS to protect myself from this situation again.
