Don’t be the first in the office

In past jobs I was asked to arrive at the office earlier than anyone so that I could help with early morning meetings. The fact was that they rarely had an early morning meeting.

Why am I sharing this? Often being the first in the office makes you hated by your coworkers. I just realized that today.

Why? It has to do with expectations. When you are early then other people might be told that X comes in why not you? It is also true in that job that I left at 5. I put in my 8 hours and then some, so I didn’t feel guilty about leaving.

I think also it is about the attitude that you have when you are early. In my case I sometimes helped someone who had forgotten their badge, or was able to fix an office issue before other people noticed like dropped wifi. If you brag about it then people resent it, but I didn’t brag about it. I didn’t mention it at all. I did what was asked of me.

If you work remotely and are first that also makes you look too eager. I always attend meetings early and often the first/second person. This is not to brag but just to say that when you have a good example you can annoy others with being perceived as being a brownnoser.

Be late sometimes. Don’t always be the first person. That way you appear human even if inside you always want to be early to things.
