Guy pays $245 for My TechNet at Home (via 何これドットネット)

Windows XP editions
Image via Wikipedia

Would you do this? I wouldn’t. He says “Its only $150 next year”. Oh that’s entirely reasonable then.  I think the hard part for most average people is paying $245 for something that is complex.  People don’t really want to have to spend money and time to figure something out.

Recently I just paid ~21,000yen for a one year MS TechNet Standard subscription for myself, for usage at home. I’m not at all sure if this is common or whether people still think Technet is just for business – or even if many people have even heard of it. Essentially though, this gets me access to most MS OSs and their variants (32-/64- bit, languages etc.) e.g. XP, Vista, Windows 7 and several server versions. It also allows me to use various ve … Read More

Canon bjc265sp Driver for Widows 7 (via Blog si Jae)

It requires a bit of hacking but it works in the end. Good work!

Recently, I upgraded my laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7. I thought there was no compatibilty issue of win 7 with my hardware, if the hardware works on xp it also works on 7. But I was wrong, my old printer, canon bjc265sp, didn’t installed itself by 7, not like xp. So I search over the internet for the driver, I am unlucky, now Canon don’t continue the support for the driver. The latest driver version only works on XP. I try to search on goog … Read More

Suggests that Windows lack of attention to detail might be the reason that Apple is enjoying success.

So, I spent a whole bunch of the day killing Windows Vista for a friend and installing Windows 7, you know, so his computer would work and stuff like that. Windows Vista has gotten a lot of bad press, but I wanted to point out that it was not the only problem this HP had.  The poor thing had been burdened down with superfluous software that all needed to start at the same time the operating system did, and was shut down manually at the … Read More

Currently I have a post-intel Macbook. I dual booted it with Windows XP a about a year ago and things worked perfectly. However two months ago, when I booted up in Mac, I was not able to connect to the internet. It “showed” that I was connected but I could not get online. Microsoft: 10,000 PCs hit with new Windows XP zero-day attack (via )

Is it even possible to secure a Windows system?

Nearly a month after a Google engineer released details of a new Windows XP flaw, criminals have dramatically ramped up online attacks that leverage the bug. Microsoft reported Wednesday that it has now logged more than 10,000 attacks. “At first, we only saw legitimate researchers testing innocuous proof-of-concepts. Then, early on June 15th, the first real public exploits emerged,” Microsoft said in a blog posting. “Those initial exploits were t … Read More

Microsoft support gets the issue correct. Great job guys.

A usability case study: Microsoft Online Assisted Support I never thought I’d be writing this on a public space but Microsoft is getting this right. As most of us techies, I do tech support for all of my less-techie friends & family. People who are particularly close to me even get ongoing preventative maintenance. (They don’t really know it’s happening, but it is.) I thus maintain Debian servers, Macbooks and Windows XP/7 laptops alike. A few weeks ago I had a misbehaving Windows 7 laptop. 2010 is the year to deploy! (via )

Gives you an overview of various methods of installing Windows 7/Server 2008.

2010 is the year to deploy! Seems lately that most of the IT professionals I come across through teaching or consults are all getting ready to deploy Server 2008 and Windows 7 at some point during 2010. And with that, most are having to change the way they image and manage Windows 7 due to the fact that 7 natively images the pc, even if you are simply installing it from CD/DVD! Gone is the i386 folder from Windows XP. Gone is the 50-60 minutes of tending to the keyboard and … Read More

Fix Winsock and TCP/IP in Windows 7 (via Nomad Computer Repair Blog)

I had to do this once to fix a customers problem. It works great.

Fix Winsock and TCP/IP in Windows 7 Yesterday after disinfecting a customer’s Windows 7 PC, it could not connect to a network. I found that I had to reset Winsock and TCP/IP. There are some great programs that will do this for you on XP, but what about Windows 7? The solution I used was pretty simple: In the start menu click in the search box and type “cmd” (without the quotes of course). You will see an item named cmd.exe. Right click it and choose “Run as Administrator.” [caption … Read More

I don’t know if people who only use Windows like the pain or really can’t afford a Mac. For something that you use all the time I would rather cut back in other areas to afford a Mac than to have to use a PC all the time.  Yes PC have their use, and so do Macs.  Thanks Maxyimus!

I had the same problem.  Since I didn’t have time to identify which one of today’s updates caused the problem, I removed them all and now my computer is back to normal.

Follow these steps:

1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console (see this Microsoft article for help with this step)

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB978262 $\spuninst

3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt

4. Type this command: systemroot

5. Repeat steps 2 – 4 for each of the following updates provided by FindMeFollowMe:

  • KB978262
  • KB971468
  • KB978037
  • KB975713
  • KB978251
  • KB978706
  • KB977165
  • KB975560

6. When complete, type this command: exit

Your computer should restart and everything should be back to normal.
