Guy pays $245 for My TechNet at Home (via 何これドットネット)

Windows XP editions
Image via Wikipedia

Would you do this? I wouldn’t. He says “Its only $150 next year”. Oh that’s entirely reasonable then.  I think the hard part for most average people is paying $245 for something that is complex.  People don’t really want to have to spend money and time to figure something out.

Recently I just paid ~21,000yen for a one year MS TechNet Standard subscription for myself, for usage at home. I’m not at all sure if this is common or whether people still think Technet is just for business – or even if many people have even heard of it. Essentially though, this gets me access to most MS OSs and their variants (32-/64- bit, languages etc.) e.g. XP, Vista, Windows 7 and several server versions. It also allows me to use various ve … Read More

Canon bjc265sp Driver for Widows 7 (via Blog si Jae)

It requires a bit of hacking but it works in the end. Good work!

Recently, I upgraded my laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7. I thought there was no compatibilty issue of win 7 with my hardware, if the hardware works on xp it also works on 7. But I was wrong, my old printer, canon bjc265sp, didn’t installed itself by 7, not like xp. So I search over the internet for the driver, I am unlucky, now Canon don’t continue the support for the driver. The latest driver version only works on XP. I try to search on goog … Read More

Suggests that Windows lack of attention to detail might be the reason that Apple is enjoying success.

So, I spent a whole bunch of the day killing Windows Vista for a friend and installing Windows 7, you know, so his computer would work and stuff like that. Windows Vista has gotten a lot of bad press, but I wanted to point out that it was not the only problem this HP had.  The poor thing had been burdened down with superfluous software that all needed to start at the same time the operating system did, and was shut down manually at the … Read More

Windows 7 HDD Mirror Issue, SyncQueue TaskGroup (via Software. Efficiency. Scalability.)

So has anyone else experienced the Windows RAID breaking and requiring a lengthy rebuild? Seems like it is more trouble than it is worth on a workstation.

I run Windows 7 on my workstation with SSD + RAID1 setup. The SSD contains Windows, Visual Studio, and some other tools that I use. The mirrored HDDs contain all data files and a backup copy of the SSD. This setup has been working fairly well for me because it gives an outstanding performance of the SSD drive (Windows 7 boots up in under 8 sec) and a stability of RAID1 which prevents any significant data loss. The only disappointing issue so far … Read More

A usability case study: Microsoft Online Assisted Support (via usability | security | freedom)

Microsoft support gets the issue correct. Great job guys.

A usability case study: Microsoft Online Assisted Support I never thought I’d be writing this on a public space but Microsoft is getting this right. As most of us techies, I do tech support for all of my less-techie friends & family. People who are particularly close to me even get ongoing preventative maintenance. (They don’t really know it’s happening, but it is.) I thus maintain Debian servers, Macbooks and Windows XP/7 laptops alike. A few weeks ago I had a misbehaving Windows 7 laptop. It would … Read More

Windows 7 – I Spoke Too Fast – Call the Exterminator (via The Pinky Update)

So the way to fix this problem is to get rid of all your old backups. Sounds like a great back up software doesn’t it?

Graphic which hints to Microsoft Windows
Image via Wikipedia

On my first attempt to use Windows 7 backup, it failed, and I received an error message for which the Microsoft support page offered the following helpful tidbit: If the reparse point points to a location that contains any compressed file format (multimedia files, .zip files, and so on), you receive an error message that resembles the following: 0×81000037: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes bein … Read More

2010 is the year to deploy! (via )

Gives you an overview of various methods of installing Windows 7/Server 2008.

2010 is the year to deploy! Seems lately that most of the IT professionals I come across through teaching or consults are all getting ready to deploy Server 2008 and Windows 7 at some point during 2010. And with that, most are having to change the way they image and manage Windows 7 due to the fact that 7 natively images the pc, even if you are simply installing it from CD/DVD! Gone is the i386 folder from Windows XP. Gone is the 50-60 minutes of tending to the keyboard and … Read More

Cannot delete a directory because Thumbs.db is locked by a process in Windows XP – Remedy (via C ä n n e ‘ s   N o t e b o o k)

Nice step by step in case you get stuck in this situation and are not an administrator.

If you have used thumbnails to view the folder and/or the sub folders the process is actually explorer.exe. There are some good, simple and reliable unlock utilities out there, but since I am on corporate Windows XP with no admin rights, I have to use another trick: Warning : by killing the process that uses the Thumbs.db file the problem is resolved. The process is usually the Explorer. But to operate the Windows XP you need the explorer.exe pro … Read More

Is Windows 7 killing your hard disks? (via Shelly1993′s Blog)

Coincidence?

Windows 7 I might simply be unlucky, or it could be that window-7-ultimate is a hard-disk killer. In the past two months, three different laptops running windows-xp-professional-service-pack-3-key-usb have totally died on me, while one had a minor collapse and refused to boot for an hour. First of all, I should make it clear that these machines don’t have an easy life. My laptop travels with me wherever I go,Office 2010 and they have a fair bit o … Read More

Workaround for Win 7 client not joining OS X Server PDC Domain

This is very clever.  Thanks Jens!

According to a thread on Apple’s Discussion boards, I quote:

I have a possible solution for some. It doesn’t exactly BIND the Windows 7 machine, but at least you can have users authenticate against your OD servers instead of having OD bound to an AD server.

Step one: Download and install pGina 2.x (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pgina/files/)

Step two: Download the LDAPAuth plugin from same location

Step three: configure pgina with the appropriate ldap settings for your environment. ()

Users can now log in.

I’d be interested to know if this works for anyone. I’m not currently in a position to experiment with this option, but will when I have the chance.”

itunes was unable to load provider data from sync services

This is an obscure error.  Moonbeam1981 seemed to fix it themselves.  Turns out “Thanks for your help, but I’d just tried somthing else and it seems to have worked. After looking at all the forums, uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, updating USB drivers etc I came across this thread:

I re-named C:\Windows\libxml2.dll

to libxml2.dl

sqlite3.dll wasn’t in my C:\Windows\ folder so I didn’t change this. Obviously this may cause problems elsewhere but things appear to be working normally so far.

It is worth a try if you’re getting desperate.

The Fax Server is currently running as a service

As Yvonne states “This message is normal when running the fax server on a Windows 7, 2008 or Vista system.
