Does your iPhoto Smart Album works with Desktop but not Screen Saver?
Turns out that Alphaman fixed the problem “Update: I’m now running 10.6.3 and iPhoto 8.1.2, and the problem is gone.”

Kappy has the answer from a FAQ. It worked for the user.
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist
“xxx” is a number.
/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)
Probably need to update to the latest 10.6.3 v1.1. This fixed the issue for this gentleman.
This seems to be one case where running Disk Permissions repair solved the issue. Personally I would reapply the combo update instead.
You may want to download and install Mac OS X v10.6.3 v1.1 Update (Combo). You can read more at this thread if you have questions.
