Are Gestural Interfaces helpful?

In this article GESTURAL INTERFACES: A STEP BACKWARDS IN USABILITY he argues that it can be helpful but also fraught with problems.  It seems clear that this is one of Apples big investments in interface when you look at all the patents they have filed in the last six months.
