Apple – Support – Discussions – Time Machine says. Interesting. Pondini has the solution below called “Full Reset” of Time Machine.”
1. In Time Machine Preferences, click the Options button. Note anything in the exclusions box, and the settings of other option(s) on that panel. Click Cancel, then turn Time Machine OFF, and quitSystem Preferences.
2. Eject, disconnect, and power-off the drive for a few moments, then reconnect it.
3. Delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (in your top-level Library folder, not your home folder). This will not delete anything in your backups. If you have a problem finding the file, see item #A7.
4. Go back to Time Machine Preferences, re-select the drive, re-enter any exclusions and other options.
5. A 120-second countdown to a backup should appear. If you close the window, it should begin immediately.”

No usb sound after installing Macosx 10.6.4. Two solutions for this.
1. Allan’s suggestion “Not 100% sure what did it, but my round Apple USB speakers are working again.
What I tried:
1) Trashed sound prefs
2) Repaired permissions (there were a couple errors)
3) Repaired Disk
4) Zapped PRAM
2. Shawn’s suggestion. ”I got the speakers working again by using Time Machine to restore the previous version of AppleUSBAudio.kext (version 2.6.8) from 10.6.3. The file resides at “/System/Library/Extensions/”
The one from 10.6.4 is version 2.7.3 ”

Then it could be a damanged or confused volume that you are trying to backup. Pondini suggestion solved the issue for the poster. “Something is probably corrupted on one of the volumes being backed-up, showing an enormous size. Tryverifying your boot volume, and repairing any others, per #A5 in Time Machine – Troubleshooting (or use the link in User Tips at the top of this forum).
If that doesn’t help, the preferences file may be corrupted. Try a “full reset” per #A4 in the same article.”
Everything you always wanted to know about Time machine from a master at the Apple forums Pondini! This is also an example of Apples hosting system, so you can experience the reliability, performance and everything you have come to expect from Apple.
You may want to disable to anti-virus while the backup happens. You can contact your anti-virus vendor to find out how to limit scanning. Find out more details here.
Turns out that Barry says “Hello JoBo:
To reinforce AxL’s always excellent advice, “defragging” a Mac running OS X is a waste of time. OS X“defrags” files of less than 20 MB on the fly.
Incidentally, restoring a system from a bootable clone (SuperDuper created, for instance) will do, more or less, what you describe.
One final thought – I suggest you get rid of whatever commercial “defragging” product you have been running. Those things can potentially cause problems.
This tutorial shows you how. Good explanation with step by step and pictures. Its pretty amazing actually when you consider all the free software that comes with the Mac and the open source stuff that you can download for free.
This article Encrypted Time Machine Backups discusses how to make your backups encrypted by using a terminal command to evoke encryption. Nice work!
If it’s not a simple thing it might be this. rst* found this “thanks for your help. Wired thing is that, I’ve found 890 files matching com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.*, where * is a combination of ascii e.g. 0k5mg4n. All the files were Zero KB. Deleted all of them and the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
TimeMachine recognized just attached drive and full backup is started. Hmm . . . next time I will read Troubleshooting more carefully. Thanks for your time!”
No, really almost everything you can find here. Very nice details especially if you are a system administrator.
Pondini suggests using Setup Assistant. It worked for the poster! Good luck! I have done this too and it worked great.
lprevost has the answer. “This thread helped me after spending hours trying to resolve my problem (can’t empty trash, gettting -8003 error message).
My fix ( make sure you turn off TM)
1) Remove all of my other files (ie. the ones other than the TM backup files) off of my external drive.
2) Use Disk utility to erase the external drive
3) Partition the disk into two partitions, one that I called ” backup” and the other that I called “stuff.”
4) I put all of my stuff back on the stuff partition.
5) I then resetup TM to do its backup on the “backup” partition.
After this, the items in the trash went away.”
It could be because a difference between the format of the Time Machine and your computer. This is what iVincent discovered here. I have also seen this occur when usb drives are plugged into hubs that may be used for keyboards, scanners and printers. Try to connect the backup device directly to the computer.
In this Apple discussions post is a great list of software alternatives for backup. If you don’t like these suggestions you are even provided links to find others. I personally use some of these to do backups and they tend to work well for small deployments.

According to this neat work around by Joe Kissell YES! Good work Mr. Kissell.
Nice step by step instructions. I have used TM and it worked perfectly to restore everything to its last state.
I am doing a test with two Macbooks. One is a 10.6 server with 2GB of Ram, and the other is a 1GB client with 10.6.2. I am doing a backup using Time Machine to the server Macbook and so far an hour later 500MB of 85GB has transferred. I am doing light text internet browsing on the client, and the server isn’t doing anything else. So wireless isn’t really a practical way to use Time Machine with gigabytes of storage as I thought.

Seems to happen with any heavy wireless network traffic. DrApa suggests “The “solution” allegedly from someone that had been in contact with AppleCare was to switch to channel 1 in the wifi settings for your Airport network. As I said before, this doesn’t solve the problem completely, but for me it was a huge improvement and now I’m only irritated when Time Machine makes its backups as to before when it was almost unusable during backups.”
Read the post here. Solution was to change the name so that no character ‘ was allowed in the name. The ‘ character was added as part of the set up procedure. Also make sure allow all incoming connections in the Security Settings in System Preferences is allowed.
