MBPro won’t shut down after Lion upgrade – Mac-Forums.com

System Preferences

I have the opposite problem where I can’t startup sometimes and get a grey screen that lasts until I hit the power button. Still this is good to know.

Make sure you’ve closed all open windows and applications that you may be using. Also, go into System Preferences, General, and remove the check from the box that states: “Restore windows when quitting…” See if that helps.

Also, the first couple of times when shutting Lion down (especially if have open applications or windows) will take longer.

Time Machine: “An error occurred while…: Apple Support Communities

Linc Davis has figured it out. Makes sense with the suggestion he gives and the poster said it worked.

Connect the drive directly to a USB port on the MBP.

In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep…” if checked.

If neither of the above helps, boot in safe mode and try again.

What software do you use that shows up in your System Preferences?

This is a screen capture of the programs that I find useful that show up in my System Preferences. All of these are free unless noted.

Bootpicker – Allows me to choose what partion or OS to startup with automatically. Great if you have a dual boot system/use Boot Camp.

Flash Player – Still fun to play flash games on ocassion

Flip4Mac WMV – Useful to watch WMV videos on the Internet.

LockTight – Allows you to lock your mac like in windows by pressing a key combination. Faster than other ways to lock the mac screen.

Macaroni – Automatically does maintenance on your mac. Useful if you shut your mac off at night. You have to buy this program, and I have not. I would suggest this software for people who turn off their Macs at night.

Mouse Acceleration – This makes your mouse even faster than it is by default. If you have a large screen or just a fast user, this will make you more efficient.

NTFS for Mac OS X – I don’t really need this, but it is nice to have for diagnostic work if you don’t have a Windows machine handy.

Perian – I want to be able to watch all video formats I come across on the Internet. This allows me to do so. I still use VLC to watch DVD’s, but otherwise I rarely run across video I can’t watch.

Removing Actions from Service System Preferences on a Mac OSX (via Jana Technology Services Blog)

An Intel Mac mini, derived from the derivation...

Nice writeup. I haven’t had anyone ever ask me to do this.

Removing an Action from the System Preferences->KeyBoard->Services on the Mac is a dark art. Numerous web searches were of no help. As we finally figured out how to do this, I thought that we would share this. 1. Step one is to open Terminal and enter: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -dump > services.txt 2. This will create a text file called s … Read More

Timeline not appearing in Time Machine

Mac OS X Leopard And Time Machine’s Lack Of Ne...

EvilGator shares with us the solution. Nice work!

I finally got on the phone with a Senior Advisor at Apple. We created another user account (System Preferences > Accounts). Time Machine worked for that user. So, the Time Machine problem was user-specific.

We went back to the original user and moved to trash the folder <home folder>Library/Caches. From there we went and moved to the desktop <user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
We then restarted the mac. Upon restart, we entered Time Machine and it worked fine. The timeline had reappeared!

Apparently there was something in the Cache that was causing the problem.

Time Machine has had a few issues. The biggest one seems to be this.

A vector hand cursor and cursor.

Thank you BobHarris.

System Preferences -> Universal Access -> Mouse -> Cursor size

However, I prefer using Mouse Locator (free download)

I like this Mouse Locator Graphic
