Synology Disk Station DS1511+ NAS server – Serial ATA-300. I had a reader search for this today and I didn’t have any articles. The Synology Disk Stations are all Time Machine compatible. These are a great way to do network backups.

Time Machine: “An error occurred while…: Apple Support Communities

Close-up of a hard disk head resting on a disk...
Image via Wikipedia

Linc Davis has figured it out. Makes sense with the suggestion he gives and the poster said it worked.

Connect the drive directly to a USB port on the MBP.

In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep…” if checked.

If neither of the above helps, boot in safe mode and try again.

Nicely done Allgemein!

To turn on “DHCAST128″ support please do the following:

1) Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and do:

sudo chmod o+w /Library/Preferences

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_host_prefs_version -int 1

Now restart your computer.

2) From Finder, select an AFP server, or use “Connect To…”. This will cause the AFP Client to create the full preferences file

3) Launch Terminal again and do:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array “Cleartxt Passwrd” “MS2.0″ “2-Way Randnum exchange”

sudo chmod o-w /Library/Preferences

Now restart your computer.

Note: To add a “DHCAST128″ to the disable list, use

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array-add “DHCAST128″

Don’t Get a Drobo (via A Geek With Guns)

AEBS and Drobo

There are some very good RAID/DAS/NAS devices to use. I have written about the Synology here, the Pegasus here, Qnap here, Netgear here, Western Digital here, Buffalo here, or a NAS roundup here.

Since I have a massive amount of data on hand I’ve been spending a lot of time looking for an external multi-drive enclosure that either had RAID capabilities or something similar. Due to reading enough positive recommendations that had the Drobo been a person it would be nominated for sainthood I decided to go with one. A bit before Christmast I ordered a standard FireWire 800 four-bay Drobo using a $100.00 discount. I was going to run it for si … Read More

Looking for a Mac compatible/tested NAS Synology unit?

Amazon.com: Synology DiskStation 5-Bay Diskless Scalable Network Attached Storage DS1010 Black: Electronics.  Great reviews.  For around $900 cheaper than a Mac OS X server, and could probably be set up by an experienced layperson.  Something to consider if budget is an issue in your company. You can find more details here on its compatibility with Time Machine.

TimeMachine on Synology 210 NAS

Comparative
Image via Wikipedia

Apple – Support – Discussions – TimeMachine on Synology 210 NAS ….  So the bottom line is that you need a 1 Ghz network or better.  It doesn’t seem to work very well with a 100Mbit network.  Thanks arv_sydney.  If you need instructions to set it up using Appletalk click here.  Don’t use this solution for more than 5 computers.  The performance cost on your network would probably be too high.
