Everything You Need to Know About 3TB Hard Drives | PCWorld. The article suggests that you test the drive by hooking it up and seeing if it is recognized. While that is easy, it does present its own set of problems. What if it isn’t fully recognized? What if you have a Windows 7 (non 64 bit OS) that only recognizes 2.2TB? Isn’t it fascinating that Macs/64 bit linux machines have no issues using/booting from these 3TB drives? The Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 seems to be the best performer from the group.

LaCie SilverKeeper vs. Time Machine vs. Superduper

Download LaCie SilverKeeper for Mac – Automate external backups to LaCie drives. MacUpdate.com. I used to use SilverKeeper when I used a LaCie hard drive more than 7 years ago. The LaCie hard drives failed, but the software always worked. According to the reviews, it worked when SuperDuper and Time Machine wouldn’t backup data.

I have used SuperDuper and never had any problems. Time Machine has had issues especially when it has to share one partition with multiple computers. So my suggestion would be to try SuperDuper first $29, if Time Machine doesn’t work, then try SilverKeeper.

Network-attached storage – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I have written before about many network attached storage systems that I have worked with and recommend. Now with cloud storage, this is becoming less popular but I believe it still has a place for professionals or anyone with non-replaceable digital assets.

I am not so fond of SAN’s for the home user, they are too complex for the average person. Many NAS systems are combining things formerly found in SAN’s like automatic failover and redundant hardware. That is an encouraging sign that eventually it will be standard.

Install OS X Snow Leopard from a USB flash drive | Maciverse. This article shows you how to accomplish this. Plus it has some helpful comments in case you get stuck. Nice work! I have done this as well and it works great. You can also use external Hard drives as the destination media. Probably any bootable external storage would work really, possibly even a NAS/SAN.
