When you save, Word for Mac crashes or quits. I had a friend have this problem today. This is a nice list of how to fix it. I like how Microsoft is doing a better job at documenting its problems.

Kernel Panic after the 10.6.8 update?
My machine acted a little strange after the update as well. The menu bar at the top didn’t fill in with color. Once I clicked on it, it appeared normally and has been normal since. However for this person, it seems software that needed updating first was the cause. MacMastery has the answer.
Based on another post I saw, you might need to start into Safe Mode (Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode ) and update your “Metakine – Hands Off!” softwarehttp://www.metakine.com/products/handsoff/releasenotes.html
Seems like their 1.3.1 version fixes a known panic with 10.6.8.

Confirmed. Worked for me too.One sidenote. After I downloaded the 10.6.6 combo updater, it would fail while trying to install files. After several attempts and some searching on other threads, I did a DiskUtil repair permissions, removed an attached USB drive, and booted in Safe Mode. While in that condition, the updater worked. Then using the App Store started to work too.Thanks.
