Vulnerability in Window 7 64-bit may be exploited by Safari | MacNN – StumbleUpon. A BSOD because of a badly executed browser instruction. That just shouldn’t happen. What doesn’t Microsoft understand that people want stable experiences not excuses?

Updating to Safari caused mac to freeze

Finder (software)

It was interesting when I updated my computer to the newest current version of Safari 5.1.1. It seemed to cause my mac to freeze. I didn’t see the Finder, and there was no sign that the computer was responding even after waiting for 15 minutes. I tried to bring up the Force Quit Application dialog box but was unable. I held down the power key for 10 seconds and the computer turned off. When I started the computer up, everything seemed fine.

I had no other applications running when I did the update. Strange for  Safari to cause the system to crash. I wonder why?

Ok. Looks like I made a mistake above. Just to double-check I ran software update again. Guess what? It said that Safari was 5.1.2. So the first time I asked Software Update to install the update, it froze and didn’t complete. The second time I asked it to update, it applied the update and restarted the computer. This is the first time I remember having a problem with Software Update. Well really a problem with the Safari installer from that. I wonder why?

Force Quit Applications warning on iMac…: Apple Support Communities. Interesting that it lists 3 programs that must be memory leakers. I seem to do better avoiding Firefox and Safari. Can’t really avoid the Finder but that is nice to know that restarting it may fix issues. The solution is below:

I just upgraded the recent version of Safari 5.1.2 for Snow Leopard and it’s supposed to fix the memory leak that’s eating up my RAM.  Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Unable to access websites in Safari?

Interesting that this is a trojan. I haven’t run across this. I like how Linc also explains how to avoid this in the future.

You installed the QHost trojan:

Trojan:BASH/QHost.WB – F-Secure Weblog : News from the Lab

As for what you should do, first of all, do not install any Safari modifications such as “Glims,” which not only won’t solve your problem, but will create other problems, right away or in the future when Safari is updated.

Check the modification date of the hosts file. If you have a Time Machine or other backup of the file older than that, restore from it. Otherwise, you’ll need to edit the file. Post if you need help doing that.

To avoid problems like this, perhaps much worse problems, you need to develop a lot more security awareness. Don’t indiscriminately install software you download from random websites. If a website tells you to install a “plugin” or “codec” from that same site, don’t do it. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s site. No intermediary is acceptable. Make sure you read the URL in the address bar. If it’s something like this:

blahblah.adobe.com/

then you’re on Adobe’s site. If it’s any of the following, you’re on a fake Adobe site:

blahblahadobe.com/

adobe.blahblah.com/

adobe.com.blahblah/

Delete the following items:

/Library/Application Support/SIMBL

/Library/LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist

/Library/ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax

Log out and log back in. Test Safari.

Combine Safari’s URL and Search Bars with Safari Omnibar. If you want to make Safari look more like Chrome, or just reduce duplication you can easily fix that following the instructions below.

backup session failed: Apple Support Communities. Turns out that if you use Xcode you should reinstall iTunes. I wonder how many people use Xcode?

Yes I read those articles but I found the correct answer elsewhere.

In one of the discussions, someone suggested that after downloading the latest version of Xcode, we better re-download de latest version of iTunes as well.

I effectively downloaded Xcode a few days ago.

So I downloaded iTunes again as stated in the discussion.

And indeed, it works now fine !

So thank you all for your kind assistance.

It a pleasure being part of this community.
