How to recognize dying industries

The Four of Us Are Dying
Image via Wikipedia

I was driving with a friend and I noticed a TV companies van. What really struck me was below the logo and slogan were the words in heavy bold type “We are not hiring.” I didn’t realize they got asked the question so much they needed to put it on their vehicle.

I immediately thought of that old german proverb. “Who is not busy growing is busy dying.” I wonder if stores like Best Buy will have that on their windows now. I used to see that when I shopped at Kmart/Sears in the past. Whats wrong with retail? Can’t they see the writing on the wall? If they don’t offer service, they have no chance to compete on price.

I went to the library to get some books today and I planned to read them. Then I said to myself “I’ll just check email” and that was 2 hours ago. Now I am going to go read.

Why would anyone in their right mind choose to sell their iPhone in exchange for a $10 Nokia cell phone? Well, I am not sure if I am the type of person that could be classified as having a “right mind” in general, but I have chosen to downgrade. A few days ago, while contemplating my nebulous future, I realized that I was carrying around a phone that was worth almost 500 dollars (my iPhone 4G, which I just upgraded, ironically) and also required … Read More

Bill Gates in Person

Is this the new reality?

It was only a few years ago; I think probably 5 or 7 years, that the global giant Microsoft was ensconced in controversy over a large anti-trust legal battle. There were articles upon articles about Microsoft and Bill Gates and a lot of them shed a negative light on the company. As a result, Microsoft was seen by a large segment of the public, as bullies, monopolists, giants, software hogs and other similar attributes. Fast forward 7 years and th … Read More
