Today two articles of mine were referenced in Yahoo answers. When I went to look at the links on Yahoo, I was forwarded to a screen that said that the question violated the Community guidelines. Interesting. I wonder what they referenced on my site?

So I was thinking that I should probably share where most of my readership is from. It seems that the bulk of people who visit are just looking for macintosh related answers. Fair enough since that is the main purpose of this site. However increasing as I have focused on non macintosh content, I have gotten traffic from that as well. In fact, my highest rated day was on a non macintosh topic. I am not chasing views, but just sharing what happens.

I was thinking that almost every community of the internet, probably violates some other communities guidelines of conduct. As a rule, I don’t feature illegal content since that doesn’t help anyone. I will link to sites that talk about things like hackintoshing which to my admittedly non-legal training, seems like a gray area. There are many gray areas in technology where what the company claims in writing and what it says are two different things.

Which is frustrating for everyone. In hackintoshing, mac software is put on Windows computers that it wasn’t designed for. The problem here is that, if you buy the Mac OS software, and you own the pc hardware it seems silly that you can’t hack this. I like that Apple is clear that they only support Mac software on mac machines. The problem is that because of the way the software works, it works in many other configurations. When someone asks me if its legal to do this, I tell them no. However that does not stop people, and perhaps it shouldn’t.

The history of computing, were people hacking the software. Some would argue that Apple still continues to hack other companies software and hardware. Apple uses the open source model and contributes back, and both sides have benefited. To me, things like hacking seem much like open-source. It allows alternative uses, that can decrease Apples profitability, but Apple has also gained much from open source software. I think that to fund development of open source is the future of any successful platform, and to encourage innovation is more helpful than limiting it.

I get it Apple. I get that controlling things has made you the star you are today. We all enjoy the positive things from the wise decisions that have made in the past. However, life is about balance. Now that Apple is no longer in danger of closing, doesn’t it seem the reins can be loosened a bit for everyone? Besides hackintoshing, what about alternative payment models in iTunes, all content allowed not just what you consider acceptable, and a willingness to properly compensate small time developers when you lift their ideas? You do most things so well, why not consider some of the social consequences of your policies? Perhaps you don’t need a “do no evil” model, but more of a “how can this benefit Apple and everyone else?” thinking.

I don’t think we have the option of chosing what photos we will keep in the Photostream folder. Deleting them with iExplorer (a program that you install in your Mac) doesn’t work because the photos are stored in iCloud.com. So to delete “all” photos you have to do the following:

1) on your iPhone go to Settings >> Photos and turn “off” Photo Stream. It will tell you that all photos will be deleted from you iPhone device. Don’t turn it back on again.

2) Acces your account at iCloud.com

3) When logged in you will see your name at the top of the page on the right, click on your name. Click on the Advanced option and then click on the Reset Photo Stream button. That’s it.

4) Now you can go back on you iPhone Settings >> Photos and turn “on” Photo Stream.

Now all your unwanted and wanted photos are gone.

Sorry there is no option to delete only the unwanted photos at least for now.

Hope this helps! It did for me.

So it turns out that for iCloud Apple ID’s need to be email addresses. That is interesting. I seem to have two email addresses that work equally well for me. One is the email address I had before the change to iCloud which was my gmail address. The second, was created by me during the installation of Lion and setup of iCloud. It asked if I wanted to create an iCloud email address. Sure why not I said? So I created one that ends in a me.com address. Now when I log in, I have logged in with both email addresses and they both seem to work and show me the same free app downloads from the Apple store.

1. On my Windows 7 computer, I went to C:/Users/User/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/Mobile Sync/Backup/[a huge set of numbers/letters] and put all the files of the earliest folder (as it is the most recent backup) into my external hard drive for transfer. ***Note: In order to view AppData, you must Unhide all hidden folders from the control panel***

2. I transferred the folder from my external hard drive to my Windows Vista Computer in C:/Users/User/AppData/Roaming/AppleComputer/MobileSync/MobileSync/Backup….

3. I connected my iPhone to my Windows Vista Computer, right clicked my iPhone in iTunes and “Restore from Backup.” The huge folder that I copied from my hard drive to my Local Disk Drive C:/ was there and it was able to restore!

Good luck! This took me 3 hours to figure out!

Chelley Vician1 seems to have a working solution.

Ok, here’s what seems to have worked….but will need to monitor to see if this stays “stable”.

1) As suggested by King_Penguin in another Discussion thread [apple support > iPad > Using iPad > Discussions] (https://discussions.apple.com/message/15911962#15911962), I turned off iPhoto startup on the iPhone. Then ejected iPhone from USB.

2) Reconnected iPhone via USB. iTunes did not start up. Started up iTunes manually. Went to Summary page for iPhone, unchecked the “open iTunes” option, selected APPLY button. Let iTunes run its application process.

3) Then checked the “open iTunes” option. Selected APPLY button. Got a dialog box asking if I wanted “iTunes Helper” to be installed; selected YES. Let iTunes run its application process. Ejected iPhone. Closed out iTunes. Reconnected iPhone via USB. AND iTunes STARTED UP AUTOMATICALLY (yay!). Let iTunes do some backup and sync’ing. Ejected iPhone. Closed out iTunes.

4) Connected iPad via USB (on computer). AND iTunes STARTED UP AUTOMATICALLY (yay!).

I don’t know for sure that the iPhoto “automatic launch” was causing the interference, but it seems like the “uncheck/check” the “open iTunes” option seemed to re-set the problem that I encountered. I don’t want to say for sure that this issue is fixed, but it appears to be under control for the moment.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and assistance. Maybe this info will help someone else out now that it’s in the forums/discussions.

First off, try dragging the file to your desktop or somewhere other than your Photos folder to make sure that it’s not trying to overwrite an existing file.

If that doesn’t work, it’s possible that the file is larger than 2GB and if your NAS is not formatted for the Mac it may have trouble copying.

Either way, right click (or control click) on the iPhoto Library and choose “Show Package Contents”.

Create a new folder wherever you want on your computer called iPhoto Library Copy (you can name it anything you want).

Slowly drag the contents from inside the old iPhoto Library into the new folder you’ve created. Since it handles the files like a normal folder system, it should give errors on whatever may be corrupted, anything corrupted you can skip.

Once it’s done copying, go to file–> get info, and go down to permissions, unlock it, then make sure you have read/write access to the files. Click the Cog and choose “Apply to Enclosed Items”.

Once you’ve got everything copied locally, launch iPhoto with the Option key down, and choose to create a new iPhoto Library. Once a new one is created, quit iPhoto, show contents of the iPhoto library you just created, and drag copy your old contents into the new library.

Open iPhoto again and see how it does!

So it appears that just waiting is enough.

Me too. I’m running a mid-2010 Mac Mini with 8GB RAM.

The first couple of times when I tried using the Software Update app, I couldn’t get the download to begin; after I clicked the Agree button, the dialog box closed, but the download never started. The Software Update app was still running, just not doing anything. I’d close the app and tray again with the same results.

Today I tried and the download did download and started to install. When it reach the ‘Registering components’ stage near the end, it appeared to hang at around 98% complete.

Because I was doing onther stuff on my computer, I let it sit there for about 40 minutes. Then, all of a sudden, it finished the install. I’ve opened iTunes and the ‘About’ box tells me I’m running iTunes 10 .4 (80) 64-bit.

So, try again and be patient.
