iTunes 10: iPhone, iPod or iPad Won’t Sync AppleToolbox – Tools, Tips and Fixes for iPhone, Mac, iPad and iPod. Some good steps here. I would start in this order though:
- Delete iTunes .plist
- Remove third-party backup of antivirus software.
- Reinstall iTunes
- Disable network connection
- Switch USB ports
- Restore instead of update.
Robert Pearson suggests this to keep the playlists and music intact.
I played around and found a fix,
Quit iTunes
go to: Users/your home folder(whatever you call it)/Music/iTunes/(here you will see a folder called”Previous iTunes Library”, click on this folder, rename this file “iTunes Library”(remove the “iTunes Library” file from the iTunes folder (usually the file directly below the “Previous iTunes Library” folder/ drag the renamed file to replace this one, restart itunes and Playlists and music should be restored perfectly,
worked for me, now if only the “experts” can work this out ( to share with everyone with this problem) or why this fix is even needed there will a lot of happy customers, good luck
This is interesting. I too am about the same age and had the same experience. To me the touch of things like books, records or CD‘s is something I am ok with letting go and here are the reasons why.
1. There is only so much material and resources in the world. The US has consumed more than its fair share, so if that means that we move towards a more virtual and less material world, that seems helpful to me.
2. Our physical formats limits us. My parents had records and records are fun, but it is hard to keep up the systems for all those physical forms of entertainment. Yes you can buy new record players, but as time goes by it becomes increasingly harder to justify old technology. I knew people who believed in Betamax and bought tapes, and now what have they had to do? Rebuy them on DVD‘s. Physical Media only seems to have a lifetime of 15-20 years from the time it was developed. So are we going to continue to rebuy things or spend the time/energy (materials) to redo our collections?
3. There is a certain elitism in having material goods. When the majority of people are virtual, the fact of having material goods says that you can afford those costs of storage, cleaning, and maintenance. In fact insurance becomes even more important in this scheme, and how many people have lost their physical possessions like records or tapes in a fire or water damage and insurance doesn’t cover it? Physical things have a built-in obsolescent, why try to hang on to what isn’t possible?
4. It can be fun to think of the past and do things in the same ways as in the past, but the world changes and we can evolve with it, or get stuck in patterns that no longer are helpful to ourselves or society. I don’t see any harm in buying old goods if the cost of using them is equal to or less than the cost of using new goods. It’s hard to see however how a record player can be more efficient than an mp3 player no matter how new it is. More moving parts is obviously more resource intensive.
There is nothing wrong in having things. Everyone is free to do as they choose. However considering the current challenges we face now, we could consider the effect our choices have on others and the planet as well as ourselves.
With each passing generation of technology, I marvel at how easy I can go online from any device and buy whatever takes my interest; games, music, videos, photos, and books are all just a click or two away. But what exactly is it that I am buying and what, pray tell, do I own? A few days ago, Apple Inc. debuted the new line of iPods (Touch, Nano, & Shuffle) that I knew my daughter would be interested in. She’s been clinging to her old iPod … Read More

Fun list. If you are technically minded you will love these podcasts.
I was slow to jump on the iPod bandwagon because the only time I listen to music is when I’m driving and my car came with a free radio built in. Why bother buying some little device to play music? Everything changed the moment I got my hands on an iPod Touch. A computer I could carry in my pocket! Finally they had reached me. But I was about to discover something more in this brand new technological world. The Podcast. These days, vast array of … Read More

This would be very cool. I wonder if it will become common?
Just came across this – Japanese Burger Kings are installing what they’re calling “musical showers” that allow customers to plug in their iPods and other MP3 players into jacks built into the walls where the music is played from a cone above the table and it audible only by those under it. No longer do you have to be subugated to coroprate muzak or generic pop music mixes designed to offend (or delight) no one. Each table can have it’s own music … Read More

When your Macbook is dying Apple looks pretty bleak. I can understand how he feels.
I had an iPod first generation die and I didn’t buy another iPod after that. It died just after the warranty was over and that is such a frustrating feeling. Especially because it was $400 then. I used it as a fire wire bootable drive for diagnostic reasons and it worked great for that. Perhaps those small drives just don’t like non music use. I have an older MacBook now and when it goes I will be sad but accept it. I would ideally like to get a years worth of use out of it, and I am at 10 months so far. Since I bought it used, I accept it will fail and then time to move to something else. I hate seeing older electronics be thrown away.
The “Z” key fell off this morning (I had to use Keyboard Viewer on my Macbook to type “Z”). Also, my hard drive has failed before, the frame around the screen almost fell off, and the top and bottom aren’t aligned. My Applecare has expired too. To those that think I “love” Apple: I don’t. I think the iPhone 4 is a fail (back is made of freaking glass!), Apple TV shouldn’t have been released, and the iPod shuffle is for little 5 year olds that wan … Read More

Nice retro look. Fun to look at it.
This brilliant, retro-tastic, über realistic Retro Cassette iPhone cover will have you reliving your youth while protecting your handset from bangs, scrapes and dust. In all fairness it’s not possible for one person to know everything. Normally if they don’t know, they will ask another genius or the team. The forums on the Internet are often full of misinformation. They really are as unhelpful and possibly dangerous as helpful.
Time for a small gripe. I’m a huge Apple fan! But unfortunately, it’s not all good news! (Duh!) My wife bought a 20 inch iMac in late 2006. I bought the new iMac 27 inch earlier this year, and love it! I just added a MacBook Pro to my arsenal. And, of course, there’s the series of iPod‘s I’ve bought over the years – with my current workhorse being a 5th generation iPod Nano. I love the products, I love the Apple Stores. I love Apple’s we … Read More

Today the iPod app on my iPhone 3GS crashed along with my belief that Apple was invincible. When my friend Biswa told me about the new OS release I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. All seemed well before I developed the urge to listen to KT Tunstall! No sooner had the album downloaded, iPod started acting up. The iPod app refused to stay alive for more than 5 seconds. Dimplemonkey said “After spending an overnight trying to make rhyme and reason of this upgrade, I believe Ive solved the riddle of the sphinx. At least for me, hopefully for you as well. Two key items to note: 1. I downloaded the firmware straight from Apples servers Google that and 2. I used the USB cable that came with my iPhone 3Gs. Note: Its only when I swapped out the cable I was using my iPod USB cable all this time is when all of a sudden significant progress was made.I hope this saves someone an awful amount of time today.”

It may need just a simple reset. Thanks planb77! “Have you tried resetting the iPod and reconnecting the Radio Remote? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together for a couple of seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise try this same troubleshooting procedure with it still connected and see if that helps.

This seems to be a bug. A temporary solution to stop this is UFCStrobe. “happens to me all the time … i’ve read that it’s the hard drive resetting itself or something … supposedly happens more often if you’re frequently picking songs manually (as opposed to just letting it play) … rumour is that resetting the ipod will help (holding the center and menu button simultaneously for 10 seconds until the apple icon pops up) … some of these things might be helping, not sure … still unpredictable though, very annoying when I’m using it in front of a crowd for work (all the time) … wish they would just fix it .”

Are you getting this message? I never have. A reader at the Apple Forums had this issue. Fortunately the solution is easy. Jim has the solution. “Here’s a script that you might want to use.
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: “Steve Ballmer’s Purchased Music”. Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track’s file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.

The normal troubleshooting things didn’t fix this issue. Turns out according to pepetrueno “fyi: what worked for me was uninstalling itunes and all related software, then deleting the usbaapl driver file from the windows\system32 directory, and re-installing. worked like a charm”.
