Your question had me wondering too and so I checked my Time Machine and couldn’t see where any photos were.  I then pulled out a book I got when I first got my mac ( Its called The Missing Manual.  I got it used from Amazon)   anyway, if you open iPhoto, go to File then Browse Backups.  It will show you the photos that have been backed up and are available for recovery.  I hadn’t paid much attention to that before and am glad I discovered it now, rather than when I am in a panic over a lost or misplaced photo.  Hope this helps you find what you are looking for.

Chelley Vician1 seems to have a working solution.

Ok, here’s what seems to have worked….but will need to monitor to see if this stays “stable”.

1) As suggested by King_Penguin in another Discussion thread [apple support > iPad > Using iPad > Discussions] (https://discussions.apple.com/message/15911962#15911962), I turned off iPhoto startup on the iPhone. Then ejected iPhone from USB.

2) Reconnected iPhone via USB. iTunes did not start up. Started up iTunes manually. Went to Summary page for iPhone, unchecked the “open iTunes” option, selected APPLY button. Let iTunes run its application process.

3) Then checked the “open iTunes” option. Selected APPLY button. Got a dialog box asking if I wanted “iTunes Helper” to be installed; selected YES. Let iTunes run its application process. Ejected iPhone. Closed out iTunes. Reconnected iPhone via USB. AND iTunes STARTED UP AUTOMATICALLY (yay!). Let iTunes do some backup and sync’ing. Ejected iPhone. Closed out iTunes.

4) Connected iPad via USB (on computer). AND iTunes STARTED UP AUTOMATICALLY (yay!).

I don’t know for sure that the iPhoto “automatic launch” was causing the interference, but it seems like the “uncheck/check” the “open iTunes” option seemed to re-set the problem that I encountered. I don’t want to say for sure that this issue is fixed, but it appears to be under control for the moment.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and assistance. Maybe this info will help someone else out now that it’s in the forums/discussions.

Download dupeGuru for Mac – A tool to find duplicate files on your computer. MacUpdate.com. This is fantastic software. People really struggle with duplicates. There is even a DupeGuru PE so you can find duplicate pictures in minutes.

Cannot copy iPhoto library from network…: Apple Support Communities. wizdomonwheels discovered the solution.

First off, try dragging the file to your desktop or somewhere other than your Photos folder to make sure that it’s not trying to overwrite an existing file.

If that doesn’t work, it’s possible that the file is larger than 2GB and if your NAS is not formatted for the Mac it may have trouble copying.

Either way, right click (or control click) on the iPhoto Library and choose “Show Package Contents”.

Create a new folder wherever you want on your computer called iPhoto Library Copy (you can name it anything you want).

Slowly drag the contents from inside the old iPhoto Library into the new folder you’ve created.  Since it handles the files like a normal folder system, it should give errors on whatever may be corrupted, anything corrupted you can skip.

Once it’s done copying, go to file–> get info, and go down to permissions, unlock it, then make sure you have read/write access to the files.  Click the Cog and choose “Apply to Enclosed Items”.

Once you’ve got everything copied locally, launch iPhoto with the Option key down, and choose to create a new iPhoto Library.  Once a new one is created, quit iPhoto, show contents of the iPhoto library you just created, and drag copy your old contents into the new library.

Open iPhoto again and see how it does!

 

Duplicate ‘com.apple.xxx’ preferences: Apple Support Communities. I have never seen this issue, but interesting that it occurs. Barry has the solution below.

An AppleScripter provided the following script which I have set up to run automatically upon shutdown or restart. You would need to change widget.weather to quicktime or whatever other preference file is appropriate.

set the_container to path to preferences folder from user domain

tell application “Finder” to tell folder the_container

delete (every file whose name contains “widget.weather” and name extension is not “plist”)

end tell

 

Poster solves his own problem with Safari running slowly and taking excessive CPU’s. Interesting troubleshooting.

Videobox was the culprit! I must\’ve accidentally installed the plugin when I used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I turned off the plugin and my Safari\’s cpus have dropped to about 10! Amazing. I also took your advice and rebuilt the 1password data file and things are getting faster. I\’m going to keep going through the logs to see what other problems I have and try and troubleshoot from there. The only other program that has gotten slow is iPhoto \’09. Think I should rebuild the library? Thanks again for your help. I will list your answer as the correct one.

Xee.This is a free source alternative to iPhoto for handling photos. Much faster and almost immediate load. I used a folder full of photos and it loaded them instantly and allowed me to easily page through.

You can easily find photos that are not in any albums by using a Smart Album with the criteria:

Album is not Any

From there you’ll have to manually drag them to their destination album.

However, once you move photos to another album you’ll have to leave it and then go back to it to see the changes you’ve made. It doesn’t automatically update changes while you’re viewing it.

I use the external as storage for the project. I boot from the computer.

You were right on the suggestion that this laptop may not have enough power. I tried it on the Church iMac and the menus were fine.

It is disappointing that iDVD will not work well on a 5 year old machine.

Bengt — After I posted that, I decided to just do what people suggested to me several years ago for iMovie at an earlier incarnation. So I went to my old old Keynote application, wrote a short page, took a screen shot of that page, and then imported that screen shot/picture to iPhoto ’11.

I knew by checking out iMovie ’11 that any image that is in iPhoto is accessible thru iMovie ’11 and can be placed into the clips. So I selected it from within iMovie ’11 and placed it before the first clip of the movie. It was an experimental movie. I wanted to add music so I did, and then decided to delete my voice, and it became a sort of coded message for lip readers. 8-)

To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name. On 10.6 those receipts may be found in the Finder using the Go menu and selecting Go To Folder

In the resulting window type

/var/db/receipts/

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you export photos, they all show up flattened-out in one folder. While this would technically work, the downside is iPhoto will suddenly have thousands of photos added to it and I’m not really sure how it will figure out the events (I didn’t try importing into iPhoto yet).

If you use Picasa’s Backup feature (Tools->Back up pictures) then all the photos show up with their folder hierarchies preserved. So for example you could end up with a folder containing the following folders and photos.

Vacation Photos
Vacation Photos/Hawaii 2009/
Vacation Photos/Hawaii 2009/pic1.jpg
Vacation Photos/Hawaii 2009/pic2.jpg
Vacation Photos/New York 2008/
Vacation Photos/New York 2008/pic1.jpg

etc.

From what I’ve read, if the “Vacation Photos” folder is imported into iPhoto, the folder names will be used as events, so in this example you’ll end up with a “Hawaii 2009″ event and a “New York 2008″ event, which is nice.

As far as Picasa’s Backup tool goes, it will create one or more top-level folders with names starting with a dollar sign. These represent the top-level folders containing photos. On the computer I tested this on I ended up with $Desktop, $My Documents, and $My Pictures, because all the photos on this computer were inside of the Desktop, My Documents, and My Pictures folders (and their children).

So in a nutshell, if you want to migrate from Picasa on Windows to iPhoto, just use Picasa’s “Back Up Pictures” menu item if you want to preserve the folder hierarchy of your photos. Oh, one last thing: this feature doesn’t let you back up to the same hard drive as the photos, so just share a folder on either your Mac or your PC and then back up to that folder.

The desktop folder somehow got locked. Did a Get Info, unchecked the lock button, and the iPhoto pictures would drag onto the Desktop

Amazon.com: Retrospect 8.0 Desktop 3U Mac Mac 8.0: Software.  Most of the reviews are negative and point out problems.  8.2 is the newest version and still plagued with issues.  See here.  I would avoid Retrospect until these issues are fixed.

The solution. I eventually narrowed down the cause to a login item—those programs listed in System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items. Further trial-and-error revealed the singular culprit:ZumoCast.

This MacWorld article points out 5 tips to increase performance.  I would avoid doing the last tip since it involves the terminal and if you make an error it might damage things instead of help them.  At the very least before you do this, do a backup of your system if you need to roll back the changes.

Fortunately a 3rd party software option exists.  You can use Batchphoto which is $29.95.  Of course you should also know that “A time stamp is embedded into the EXIF data of every photo you take with your iPhone. You can view this in any EXIF compliant image viewer.”  Thanks Julian Wright!
