From an Apple article. What an oversight. Well at least there is a workaround.

One safe non destructive way of accomplishing this is to follow Terence suggestions “There is another way to make a new Library and preserve a lot more of your Work
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over – no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance – but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you’re not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.”

This MacWorld article points out 5 tips to increase performance. I would avoid doing the last tip since it involves the terminal and if you make an error it might damage things instead of help them. At the very least before you do this, do a backup of your system if you need to roll back the changes.
This thread gives you the nitty gritty. For most people just using the defaults is perfect. If you are a photographer than currently Lightroom seems to be strong competition for Aperture. Something to consider since you will unlikely be unhappy with iPhoto.
Turns out that Alphaman fixed the problem “Update: I’m now running 10.6.3 and iPhoto 8.1.2, and the problem is gone.”

It is best explained with the photo that Jolly Giant includes in this post. Or “another thing to try: iPhoto > preferences > general” and change to No Application.

Terence said to look at this Duplicate Annihilator. It has a free trial period and well worth the $7.99 for the full price.
LarryHN has a great suggestion for this. “I’m not sure how you used to do it but if you select tow photos and right click and choose edit both will be shown side by side
LN
PS that was tested in iPhoto ’09 – think it was the same in ’08″
This website Bascis4Mac has some great tutorials. Really amazing all of the information that you can learn and is nicely gathered here.
Fortunately a 3rd party software option exists. You can use Batchphoto which is $29.95. Of course you should also know that “A time stamp is embedded into the EXIF data of every photo you take with your iPhone. You can view this in any EXIF compliant image viewer.” Thanks Julian Wright!
Easy to do. Just follow the instructions here.
- Press Command-K or click on the Window menu and choose Show Keywords.
- Now select photos from your library that you want to tag, using the shift or command key to make multiple selections.
- Click the tag or tags that you want to apply to these photos. Tags become highlighted once you add them to the selected photos. If you click a highlighted tag it will be removed from the photos you selected.
- You can also use the keyword window to add, edit, or remove keywords by clicking on the “Edit Keywords” button.
Probably because of doing something like this: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss. Thanks Terrance.
- How to fix this problem.
- To create and populate a new library:
- Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
- In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at ‘Imported Items from the Finder’
- Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
- Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
- Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
- When you’re sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.

Try this: Thanks dickey2988!
1. For the image capture: You need to run Image Capture, which is in your Applications folder of your hard drive, to tell your MacBook what to do when a camera is connected. This should have been defaulted to iPhoto from the factory, but it sounds as though yours has been altered in some way.
2. Plug a mouse into the working USB port to make sure it works. Then plug it into the non-working USB port. Is is still dead? If so, then try shutting down your MB and removing the battery for 10 or 15 seconds, then put it back in (unplug the computer from the AC adapter, too). If it’s still not functioning, give Apple a call.
You might also make sure you have the latest software.
You can also thank Mrkgoo. Try this: “Anyway, I have a 7D and I use iPhoto. I found that it can sometimes ‘not connect’, often when I have it plugged in and THEN open iPhoto. It seems to have little issue if I plug it in while iPhoto is open. Maybe that will help.” This worked for others.

Very cool solution to this. Easy. Thanks Terence! Read more here.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over – no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance – but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Wow what a simple fix. Apple says to reinstall the program. You can read more at this short post.

iPhoto Slide Show freezes Seems to occur when the OS is upgraded or Migrated. Copying hd/library/application support/iLifeSlideshow from another Intel Mac is one solution.
Is there anyway to disable faces? The poster RobertMan has the solution.”Yes, there (sort of) is.
- Stop iPhoto application.
- as root: cd into your Pictures/iPhoto Library
- then remove both face.db and face_blob.db
- then make both of these links to /dev/null
- when finished, it should look like this:
- lrwxr-xr-x 1 root robertm 9 Apr 25 01:59 face.db -> /dev/null
- lrwxr-xr-x 1 root robertm 9 Apr 25 02:00 face_blob.db -> /dev/null
- This effectively stops faces from keeping any databases.
- (Warning: it still “tries” to run just after an import of a fresh set of photos,
- just stop/restart iPhoto after an import to get your precious CPU back).
- The good thing is: No more database of people and where/when you last saw them
- on your HD.
- Restart iPhoto. (no more faces, no more CPU / Drive consumption either).”
